Level 4 3D Modelling And Games
Modelling process
To make my models I have used Maya 2020, which is a piece of software that speciallises in modelling. I found this piece of software to be very useful for different tools that I have used.
To make my models I started by adding a shape as a starting point and then resized and reshaped it into the object I needed. When I was happy with how the shape looked I extruded the shape for any parts of the model, for example with the cue it gets smaller towards the tip of the cue so I needed to extrude this to make sure that it looked more realistic. The next step was to add the textures to the different objects to do this I found a few free images on the internet and imported them into Maya 2020 to then add them to my model.
Materials
For my materials I have added some wood materials and other various materials I thought would suit the objects I have made. To add the materials I went onto the internet and found some free images of metirals, saved them to my desktop and imported them into maya to then assign the different materials to the different objects. For this I mostly used wood textures as all of the models looked good with wood textures assigned to them.
Rendering and uv unwrapping
For this assignment I decided to not do UV unwrapping and rendering because I may still decide to remake or change these models before doing so in the future depending on how all of the other models within my game look so that the models complement the game that I have built. Another reason I haven't done this is because the rendering of models is time consuming and my time would be better spent on making the models for this assignment and then I can decide later if I am going to make any changes to them.
Soft skills
The soft skills I have learnt through this assignment are; bridging, extruding, assigning materials and how to use maya in genral.
The bridging skill was important for later on in this assignment because I have used this skill to fill in gaps for example, the roof on my house that I made for this assignment. The second skill I learnt, extruding was important because I used this skill throughout the assignment to make sure that all the models were the correct shape and sizes and this would allow me to change the size of a model half way through, for example the pool cue becomes thinner and therefor extruding is used to make this look realistic.
The next soft skill I used was assigning materials. This skill was important because it allowed me to find the materials I wanted, import them into Maya 2020 and then assign them to the correct models to make them look further realistic and more stylish.
Finally, the most important soft skill I learnt was using Maya. Maya was the software I used for the modelling of my actual models and also have used this for my animation assignment aswell. This was the most important soft skill to learn because when first using this software, not having much experience it was a learning curve I had to overcome and I think this was also the biggest achievement during this assignment.
Targets for next time
My first target for next time is to use rendering and UV unwrapping to import the models into unreal engine. This is important because my final game will be in unreal engine therefor I will have to import these models into that software eventually.
The second target for next time is to be more brave and explore more different functions within Maya 2020. To achieve this next time I will make more complex and more time consuming models. This is because I feel more confident using the software now so I feel that if I have been given this time again I will be able to make more complex models.
Overall, I feel that I have done well in this assignment and that my models have turned out how I wanted them to.
